This diagram is one I have developed and found to be useful in summarizing the way we respond and deal with the world. The diagram is based on ideas I have culled from Affect Theory.

We have Ourselves and Other. We interact with the world. The world can be inviting or hurtful. If inviting we will explore Other and feel Pride and Joy.

If not inviting or hurtful we need to be careful because we might run away form it and hurt ourselves and feel guilty.

If hurtful we might, on the other hand, explore the OTHER to solve the problem.

The extra curved arrows are to emphasize that when we are distancing ourselves from and evaluating the situation we are paying attention to our hurt and if we are doing that we are paying attention to what is hurting us. It is the very same process when we are interested in something OTHER that is inviting, just harder.

(until corrected please note that the red arrow overwritten by "other" and "negative" is going in the wrong direction)
